About the Audi R8 V10 (second generation)

The second-generation R8 went on sale in the US for the 2017 model year with a V10 as its only engine, where the first generation had also offered a V8. The 5.2-liter FSI V10 is naturally aspirated and revs to 8,700 rpm. It combines port injection at part load with direct injection, which does most of the work at full load, and adds cylinder on demand and dry-sump lubrication. Audi describes it as nearly identical to the engine of the R8 LMS race car.

Behind the engine sits a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox, and the quattro system can vary the torque split fully between the axles. The R8 shares its aluminum and carbon-fiber chassis, V10 and gearbox with the Lamborghini Huracán. In this regular V10 form it rides on magnetic ride adaptive dampers and stops with steel brakes, the main hardware differences from the harder-edged V10 plus.

Audi refreshed the R8 for 2020 with a restyled front end and more output from the V10 quattro. Coupe and Spyder bodies were offered.

On a 2021 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 562 hp and 413 lb-ft to 650 hp and 460 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 680 hp and 480 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

R8 V10 (second generation) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the R8 V10 (second generation) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2017–2021 Audi R8 V10 (second generation) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.

Which R8 generation is this page for?

The second generation, sold in the US from the 2017 model year. The first-generation R8 was offered with a 4.2-liter V8 or a 5.2-liter V10 and a six-speed manual or R tronic single-clutch gearbox; the second generation is V10 only and always has the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch.

How does the R8 V10 differ from the R8 V10 plus?

The V10 plus is about 110 lb lighter and has more power, standard carbon-ceramic brakes, a carbon fixed rear wing, front lip, mirror housings and diffuser, racing shell seats and a fixed sport suspension in place of magnetic ride. It has its own page, R8 V10 plus (second generation).

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the R8 V10 (second generation)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2021 car, Stage 1 takes it from 562 hp to 650 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 680 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the R8 V10 (second generation)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,499). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
