About the Audi S4 (B9)

With the B9 generation, introduced for the 2018 model year, the S4 changed its powertrain on two counts. A single twin-scroll turbocharger replaced the supercharger on the 3.0-liter TFSI V6, and an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic with a torque converter took the place of the B8.5 car’s seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch and six-speed manual, so the US car has been automatic only since.

quattro all-wheel drive is standard, and a sport rear differential was available to shift torque between the rear wheels in corners. Audi quotes 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

In the US the S4 is sold only as a sedan. The S4 Avant wagon offered in Europe never came here, so buyers who wanted the same drivetrain in a different shape had the S5 Coupe, Sportback and Cabriolet to choose from. Of the four B9 S bodies, the S4 is the only conventional sedan with a separate trunk.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 354 hp and 369 lb-ft to 425 hp and 440 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 460 hp and 480 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

S4 (B9) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the S4 (B9) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2018–2024 Audi S4 (B9) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

How can I tell a B9 S4 from the previous B8.5?

Check the gearbox and the engine. The B8.5 S4 has a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch. The B9 has a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 and is only available with the eight-speed Tiptronic automatic.

Is the S4 the same car as the S5?

Under the skin, largely yes: the B9 S4 and S5 share the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, the eight-speed Tiptronic and quattro. The S4 is the four-door sedan, while the S5 comes as a Coupe, Sportback or Cabriolet. The S5 has its own page, S5 (B9).

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the S4 (B9)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 354 hp to 425 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 460 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the S4 (B9)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,499). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
