About the Audi S8 (D5)

Audi sells the D5 S8 in the US only with the long wheelbase, where the D4 before it used the standard one. Under the hood is again a 4.0-liter V8 with two turbochargers, now working with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and the eight-speed Tiptronic and quattro with a sport differential carry over.

Much of the new hardware is in the chassis. When the car launched, Audi of America made predictive active suspension and dynamic all-wheel steering standard, so the rear wheels steer as well as the front; its later technical specifications list sport adaptive air suspension instead of the predictive system. Audi quotes 0–60 mph in 3.8 seconds and an electronically limited 155 mph.

Earlier cars, including the S8 plus, are listed on the S8 (D4) page.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 563 hp and 590 lb-ft to 780 hp and 740 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 800 hp and 760 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

S8 (D5) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the S8 (D5) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2019–2024 Audi S8 (D5) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

How do I tell a D5 S8 from the D4?

In the US every D5 S8 has the long wheelbase and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and early cars came with predictive active suspension and all-wheel steering. The D4 used the standard wheelbase without mild-hybrid assistance, and from 2016 it was sold as the S8 plus. The D4 has its own page, S8 (D4).

Does every D5 S8 have predictive active suspension?

Audi of America listed predictive active suspension and dynamic all-wheel steering as standard when the D5 S8 launched. Its later technical specifications, for 2022 and 2025, list sport adaptive air suspension instead, so the suspension fitted can differ by model year.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the S8 (D5)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 563 hp to 780 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 800 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the S8 (D5)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,499). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
