About the Audi S8 (D4)

Audi’s D4 S8 is the performance version of the A8 of its generation, sold in the US on the standard wheelbase only. Its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 places the turbochargers and intercooler inside the vee, and cylinder on demand lets it run on four cylinders at light load. An eight-speed Tiptronic automatic drives all four wheels through quattro with a sport differential that varies torque between the rear wheels.

From the 2016 model year the higher-output S8 plus replaced the regular car in the US, and it remained the only S8 offered through 2018. It added an overboost function, and its Dynamic package brought ceramic brakes, a sport exhaust, a carbon lip spoiler and a 190 mph top speed.

The D5 that followed is long-wheelbase only in the US and adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid system; it has its own page, S8 (D5).

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 577 hp and 556 lb-ft to 700 hp and 750 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 740 hp and 800 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

S8 (D4) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the S8 (D4) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2012–2018 Audi S8 (D4) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

How do I tell a D4 S8 from a D5?

Check the wheelbase and the electrical system. In the US the D4 was sold on the standard wheelbase and has no mild-hybrid assistance, while the D5 is long-wheelbase only and has a 48-volt system, predictive active suspension at launch and all-wheel steering. The D5 is listed on its own page, S8 (D5).

What was the S8 plus?

A higher-output D4 that took over from the regular S8 in the US for the 2016 to 2018 model years. Besides more output and an overboost function, it could be ordered with a Dynamic package that included ceramic brakes, a sport exhaust, a carbon lip spoiler and a 190 mph top speed.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the S8 (D4)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2018 car, Stage 1 takes it from 577 hp to 700 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 740 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the S8 (D4)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,499). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
