About the Audi RS 5 (B9)

The B9 RS 5 broke with its predecessor’s formula. The previous RS 5 used a high-revving 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V8; this one has a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 with both turbochargers inside the vee and B-cycle combustion with central direct injection, trading the old engine’s top-end character for far more torque low in the rev range.

An eight-speed Tiptronic automatic takes the place of the earlier car’s seven-speed S tronic, and quattro uses a self-locking center differential with a 40:60 split, with the quattro sport rear differential standard. Audi quotes 0–60 mph in 3.7 seconds for the Coupe and 3.8 seconds for the Sportback.

The Coupe arrived for 2018, and the five-door Sportback followed for 2019 as the first RS 5 Sportback sold in the US. A Competition package offered from 2023 added coilover suspension and a higher top speed.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 444 hp and 433 lb-ft to 530 hp and 630 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 550 hp and 560 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

RS 5 (B9) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the RS 5 (B9) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2018–2024 Audi RS 5 (B9) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

How is the RS 5 different from the S5?

The S5 uses a 3.0-liter V6 with a single turbocharger, while the RS 5 has a 2.9-liter V6 with two turbochargers and much more output, plus a standard sport differential and RS suspension tuning. The S5 was also sold as a Cabriolet. It has its own page, S5 (B9).

Which RS 5 body styles were sold in the US?

Two: the Coupe from the 2018 model year and the five-door Sportback from 2019, both with the same twin-turbo V6, gearbox and quattro drive. This generation had no RS 5 Cabriolet, which the earlier V8-powered RS 5 had offered.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the RS 5 (B9)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 444 hp to 530 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 550 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the RS 5 (B9)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,499). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
