The car
Seventh-generation 5 Series sedans, coded G30, reached US showrooms for the 2017 model year, and the 540i is the six-cylinder model: the step between the four-cylinder 530i and the V8 M550i xDrive. Compared with the F10 it replaced, it makes wider use of aluminum and high-strength steel to save weight.
A single twin-scroll turbocharger feeds the 3.0-liter six, and an eight-speed Steptronic sends its output to the rear wheels or, on the 540i xDrive, to all four. The 2021 update revised the styling and added a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, in which a starter-generator recovers energy under braking and can briefly add electric assistance under acceleration.
The catalog’s years run through 2024. The G30 left the US lineup after the 2023 model year, and the 2024 540i belongs to the G60 generation.
On a 2024 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 335 hp and 332 lb-ft to 495 hp and 500 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 515 hp and 565 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2017–2024 BMW 540i (G30) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.
The G60 generation reached US dealers in October 2023 as a 2024 model, and in the US its 540i was sold only with xDrive. This page is written for the G30, sold here for the 2017 to 2023 model years. If your 540i is a 2024 G60, contact us before ordering so we can confirm what applies to it.
The M550i xDrive (G30) swaps the inline-six for a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, comes only with all-wheel drive, and by 2021 carried a rear M Sport differential and Adaptive M Suspension as standard. The 540i shares its body and cabin but was offered with rear-wheel drive as well as xDrive.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 335 hp to 495 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 515 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
