The car
The 8 Series name returned in late 2018 with the M850i xDrive coupe, developed in parallel with the M8 and the M8 GTE endurance racer. The convertible followed in March 2019 and the four-door Gran Coupe for the 2020 model year, and the six-cylinder 840i joined the range below it.
A new generation of BMW’s 4.4-liter M Performance V8 does the work, with twin-scroll turbochargers inside the vee between the cylinder banks. An eight-speed Steptronic Sport feeds xDrive all-wheel drive, which works with an electronically controlled rear differential lock, and Integral Active Steering is standard.
Weight was part of the brief: aluminum, magnesium and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic all appear in the structure, and a carbon roof was optional. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 3.6 seconds for the coupe, 3.7 for the Gran Coupe and 3.8 for the convertible, with top speed limited to 155 mph.
On a 2024 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 523 hp and 553 lb-ft to 720 hp and 650 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 745 hp and 675 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2019–2024 BMW M850i (G14 / G15 / G16) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.
No. The M8 Competition (F91 / F92 / F93) is the full M car, with BMW M’s S63 V8 and its own chassis tuning, and it has a separate page. The M850i is the M Performance model below it, closer in character to a grand tourer.
The M850i xDrive coupe and convertible from the 2019 model year and the four-door Gran Coupe from 2020, through 2024 in the catalog. All three use the same V8 and all-wheel drive; the Gran Coupe adds a second pair of doors.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 523 hp to 720 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 745 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
