The car
Three body styles share the 840i name: the G15 coupe, the G14 convertible with its fabric roof, and the four-door G16 Gran Coupe. All use BMW’s 3.0-liter inline-six with a twin-scroll turbocharger, and all sit below the V8 M850i xDrive in the 8 Series range.
The coupe and convertible reached US showrooms in September 2019 as 2020 models, joining the Gran Coupe and the V8 cars. Rear-wheel-drive versions come with an M Sport differential as standard; xDrive versions add all-wheel drive and standard Integral Active Steering, which steers the rear wheels as well as the front. Every 840i uses the eight-speed Steptronic Sport.
BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds for the 840i xDrive coupe and 5.0 seconds for the rear-drive convertible, with top speed limited to 130 mph on all-season tires or 155 mph on performance tires. The 2023 update brought a redesigned front end, an illuminated kidney grille and a larger 12.3-inch central display.
On a 2024 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 335 hp and 369 lb-ft to 495 hp and 500 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 515 hp and 565 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

The six-cylinder 840i and 840i xDrive in all three bodies: the G15 coupe, the G14 convertible and the G16 Gran Coupe, which is the one with four doors. In the US the six-cylinder cars arrived for the 2020 model year, after the V8 coupe and convertible had launched.
The M850i (G14 / G15 / G16) uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and comes only with xDrive. The 840i keeps the same bodies and gearbox but uses the inline-six, and of the two it is the only one offered with rear-wheel drive.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 335 hp to 495 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 515 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
