The car
The second-generation 4 Series has a look of its own, led by a kidney grille that is angled forward and runs down to the bottom of the bumper. The M440i is its six-cylinder M Performance model, offered as the G22 coupe, the G23 convertible and the G26 Gran Coupe, a four-door hatchback.
Its 3.0-liter inline-six works with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an eight-speed sport automatic; no manual was offered. The coupe launched in October 2020 as a 2021 model with xDrive and a rear M Sport differential as standard, and a rear-drive coupe followed for 2022.
The convertible, now with a fabric roof, arrived in spring 2021, and the Gran Coupe followed for 2022, at first with xDrive only. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 4.3 seconds for the M440i xDrive coupe and 5.0 for the rear-drive convertible.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 382 hp and 369 lb-ft to 495 hp and 500 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 515 hp and 565 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2021–2024 BMW M440i (G22 / G23 / G26) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.
All three M440i bodies of this generation: the G22 coupe, the G23 convertible and the G26 Gran Coupe, which has four doors and a hatchback. They share the six-cylinder engine, the mild-hybrid system and the automatic gearbox.
The M4 (G82) and its Competition and CSL versions are full M cars, with engines and chassis developed by BMW M, and each has its own page. The M440i is the M Performance model of the regular 4 Series, built on the same bodies but with the B58 six and a softer brief.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 382 hp to 495 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 515 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
