About the BMW M340i (G20)

From the start, the G20 3 Series had an M Performance model: the M340i, which reached the US in summer 2019 as a 2020 model and replaced the 340i as the six-cylinder 3 Series. It sits between the four-cylinder 330i and the M3 (G80), and an M Sport limited-slip differential is standard.

There is no manual: the single-turbo 3.0-liter six sends its power through an eight-speed Sport Steptronic to the rear wheels or, with xDrive, to all four. From the 2021 model year the engine works with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds for the rear-drive car and 4.1 to 4.2 seconds for the M340i xDrive.

The 3 Series was facelifted for the 2023 model year, with US sales from July 2022, so the catalog’s 2020 to 2024 range covers the M340i before and after that update.

On a 2024 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 382 hp and 369 lb-ft to 495 hp and 500 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 515 hp and 565 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

M340i (G20) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the M340i (G20) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2020–2024 BMW M340i (G20) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.

How does the M340i differ from the F30 340i?

The 340i (F30) is the previous generation, sold as a sedan through 2018 with a manual gearbox available. The M340i moved to the larger G20 body, became automatic-only, gained a standard M Sport differential and carries an uprated version of the B58 six.

Is the M340i the same as the M440i?

They share the engine, gearbox and drivetrain, but the M440i (G22 / G23 / G26) is the coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe family, with its own body and a tall kidney grille that reaches the bottom of the bumper. The M340i is the sedan, with the conventional 3 Series front end.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the M340i (G20)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 382 hp to 495 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 515 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the M340i (G20)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
