The car
BMW positioned the M550i xDrive as an M Performance model: the fastest 5 Series short of the M5, with a V8 and all-wheel drive as standard. It arrived in the US for the 2018 model year and, unlike the 530i and 540i, was never offered with rear-wheel drive.
Under the hood is a 4.4-liter V8 with two twin-scroll turbochargers inside the vee, driving through an eight-speed Steptronic Sport. Its xDrive system leans on the rear axle in normal driving, so the car behaves much like a rear-drive sedan until traction runs short.
Two versions of the engine appear in the catalog. The 2018 and 2019 cars use the earlier V8; from 2020 the catalog lists the uprated V8 shared with the M850i. With that engine BMW’s quoted 0–60 mph time fell from 3.9 seconds to 3.6, and the 2021 facelift then added an aerodynamic kit and a trunk-lid spoiler.
On a 2024 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 523 hp and 553 lb-ft to 720 hp and 650 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 745 hp and 675 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2018–2024 BMW M550i xDrive (G30) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.
BMW reworked the V8 during the G30’s run. Cars from 2018 and 2019 use the earlier engine, later cars the uprated one, and the 2021 facelift brought new front and rear styling, a trunk-lid spoiler and Cerium Grey trim on the mirror caps and grille surround. The catalog lists each version with its own factory figures, so choose your model year when ordering.
The M5 (F90) and M5 Competition (F90) are full M cars with BMW M’s own V8 and chassis, and each has its own page. The M550i is the M Performance step below: it keeps the regular 5 Series body and cabin of the 540i, with a 4.4-liter V8 and standard all-wheel drive.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 523 hp to 720 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 745 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
