About the BMW M240i (G42)

The G42 is the second generation of 2 Series Coupe, and the M240i is its six-cylinder M Performance model. It went on sale in the US in November 2021 as a 2022 model and was offered only as a coupe; the four-door 2 Series Gran Coupe is a separate model with a different layout.

Every M240i uses a 3.0-liter inline-six with a single twin-scroll turbocharger and an eight-speed Sport Steptronic; no manual was offered. At launch every US car was the M240i xDrive, with an M Sport rear differential as standard, and a rear-wheel-drive M240i joined the range for 2023.

BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 4.1 seconds for the xDrive car and 4.5 for the rear-drive version, with top speed limited to 130 or 155 mph depending on specification.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 382 hp and 369 lb-ft to 495 hp and 500 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 515 hp and 565 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

M240i (G42) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the M240i (G42) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2021–2024 BMW M240i (G42) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

Which M240i model years does this page cover?

The catalog lists the G42 from 2021 to 2024. In the US the G42 went on sale for the 2022 model year, so a car sold as a 2021 M240i is the earlier F22 or F23 generation, with a different body and engine tune. Contact us before ordering if you are unsure which one you have.

How does the M240i differ from the M2?

The M2 (G87) is the full M version of the 2 Series coupe, with an engine, chassis and bodywork developed by BMW M, and it has a separate page. The M240i keeps the regular coupe body and uses the B58 inline-six with an automatic gearbox only.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the M240i (G42)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 382 hp to 495 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 515 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the M240i (G42)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
