The car
Long-wheelbase only in the US, the sixth-generation 7 Series was, by BMW’s account, the roomiest sedan it had built, and the 740i was the way into the range. Its Carbon Core passenger cell combines carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic with ultra-high-tensile steel and aluminum, and BMW put the new car at about 190 pounds lighter than the one it replaced.
Power comes from a 3.0-liter inline-six with a twin-scroll turbocharger, paired with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic. The 740i drives the rear wheels, and from 2017 the 740i xDrive added all-wheel drive. Self-leveling air suspension at both axles was standard, which suits a car meant to be ridden in as much as driven.
The catalog covers the 2016 to 2020 model years, so it includes the first facelifted cars, recognizable by a much larger kidney grille.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 320 hp and 330 lb-ft to 435 hp and 445 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 460 hp and 475 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2016–2020 BMW 740i (G11 / G12) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.
Long. BMW sold this generation in the US only with the long wheelbase (the G12 body), even though the badge reads 740i rather than 740Li. Short-wheelbase G11 cars were sold in other markets. The plug-in hybrid 740e and 745e share the body but use different powertrains.
They share the body, the air suspension and the eight-speed automatic, and both were offered with rear-wheel drive or xDrive. The 750i (G11 / G12) uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 instead of the six, and BMW quoted 4.3 seconds to 60 mph for the 2016 750i xDrive against 5.4 for the 740i.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2020 car, Stage 1 takes it from 320 hp to 435 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 460 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
