About the BMW M2 (F87)

The first M2, the F87, reached US showrooms in spring 2016: a compact two-door coupe built around a 3.0-liter inline-six with a single TwinScroll turbocharger. BMW M gave it the lightweight aluminum front and rear axles of the M3 and M4, and 19-inch forged wheels, 9 inches wide at the front and 10 at the rear.

A six-speed manual is standard, and the seven-speed M DCT dual-clutch with Drivelogic was the option; either way the rear wheels are driven through an Active M Differential. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds with the manual and 4.2 with the M DCT and Launch Control, a US curb weight of 3,450 pounds for the manual car, and an electronically limited 155 mph.

Two later cars have their own pages. The M2 Competition (F87) took the twin-turbo S55 engine from the M3 and M4, and the second-generation M2 (G87) moved to the S58 and an eight-speed automatic.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 365 hp and 343 lb-ft to 435 hp and 420 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 455 hp and 440 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

M2 (F87) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the M2 (F87) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2016–2020 BMW M2 (F87) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

How do I tell an F87 M2 from the G87?

Look at the engine and, on two-pedal cars, the gearbox. The F87 has a single-turbo six and offers a seven-speed M DCT dual-clutch, while the G87 uses the twin-turbo S58 shared with the M3 and M4 and an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic. The G87 also rides on a wheelbase 2.1 inches longer and has its own page, M2 (G87).

Is the M2 Competition covered on this page?

No. This page is the original F87 M2 with the single-turbo engine. The M2 Competition (F87) uses the twin-turbo S55 from the M3 and M4, with extra radiators and an engine oil cooler, and leaves the factory with a different rating, so it has a page of its own.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the M2 (F87)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2020 car, Stage 1 takes it from 365 hp to 435 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 455 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the M2 (F87)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
