About the BMW M3 Competition (G80)

Rear-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic and the higher of the two regular S58 outputs: that combination is the G80 M3 Competition, on sale since March 2021. It uses the same 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six as the base M3 in a stronger state of tune, and trades the six-speed manual for an eight-speed M Steptronic with Drivelogic shift programs.

Staggered wheels mark it out, 19 inches at the front and 20 at the rear on 275/35 and 285/30 tires, against 18- and 19-inch wheels on the base car. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 3.8 seconds, three-tenths quicker than the manual M3, and the limited top speed rises from 155 to 180 mph with the M Driver’s Package. Options include M Carbon bucket seats with carbon fiber in the seat structure, which BMW says save 21 pounds over the standard M sport seats.

For buyers who wanted all-wheel drive, BMW added the M3 Competition xDrive in summer 2021; this page is the rear-drive sedan.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 503 hp and 479 lb-ft to 750 hp and 730 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 785 hp and 750 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

M3 Competition (G80) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the M3 Competition (G80) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2021–2024 BMW M3 Competition (G80) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

How does the M3 Competition differ from the base G80 M3?

Both are G80 sedans with the S58 engine. The Competition leaves the factory with more power and torque, the eight-speed automatic in place of the manual and larger wheels. Because the factory figures differ, each has its own listing; the manual car is on our M3 (G80) page.

Should I use this page or the M3 Competition xDrive (G80) page?

It depends on which wheels are driven. This page is for the rear-wheel-drive M3 Competition. If your car has M xDrive, with 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD settings among its drive options, use the M3 Competition xDrive (G80) page instead.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the M3 Competition (G80)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 503 hp to 750 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 785 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the M3 Competition (G80)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
