About the BMW M3 (F80)

When the F80 arrived for the 2015 model year, the M3 became a sedan only, as the coupe took the new M4 name, and BMW USA had the first cars in showrooms in early summer 2014. The V8 of the previous M3 gave way to the S55, a 3.0-liter inline-six with two mono-scroll turbochargers that revs to 7,600 rpm, and BMW put the weight saving over the outgoing car at around 80 kilograms, roughly 175 pounds.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic forms the roof, the propeller shaft and the strut brace in the engine bay. The standard six-speed manual blips the throttle on downshifts, and the optional seven-speed M DCT adds Launch Control; both drive the rear wheels through an Active M Differential, an electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip unit. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 4.1 seconds for the manual and 3.9 for the M DCT.

The G80 that followed has its own page, M3 (G80), and the F80’s coupe counterpart is listed as M4 (F82).

On a 2020 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 431 hp and 406 lb-ft to 560 hp and 560 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 600 hp and 600 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

M3 (F80) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the M3 (F80) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2015–2020 BMW M3 (F80) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.

How do I tell an F80 M3 from a G80?

From the front, the F80 has a wide, low pair of kidney grilles, while the G80 has a large, deep frameless grille. Under the hood the F80 carries the S55 engine and the G80 the S58, and only the F80 was offered with a dual-clutch gearbox. The G80 has its own page, M3 (G80).

Is the F80 M3 the same car as the F82 M4?

Mechanically they are twins, with the same S55 engine, the same two gearboxes and carbon-fiber roofs on both. The M3 is the four-door sedan; the M4 is the coupe that replaced the M3 Coupe for 2015, and it is listed on our M4 (F82) page.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the M3 (F80)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2020 car, Stage 1 takes it from 431 hp to 560 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 600 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the M3 (F80)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
