The car
M xDrive reached the M3 for the 2022 model year, arriving at US dealers in August 2021, and BMW offered it only in Competition form. The system is designed to keep the sedan feeling rear-driven: an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch sends torque to the front axle only when the rear tires need help, and an Active M Differential divides it between the rear wheels.
Three settings let the driver decide how much the front axle contributes. 4WD is the default, 4WD Sport shifts more torque rearward for track driving, and 2WD, available with stability control switched off, sends everything to the back. Engine and gearbox match the rear-drive M3 Competition, namely the S58 twin-turbo inline-six and the eight-speed M Steptronic. The extra traction shows in BMW’s 0–60 mph figure of 3.4 seconds, 0.4 seconds quicker than the rear-drive car, at a curb weight of 3,990 pounds.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 503 hp and 479 lb-ft to 750 hp and 730 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 785 hp and 750 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2021–2024 BMW M3 Competition xDrive (G80) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.
Cars with M xDrive were built from the 2022 model year and offer 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD choices in the vehicle settings; a rear-wheel-drive M3 Competition has none. The window sticker or build sheet will also list M xDrive.
The M3 CS starts from this car, keeping M xDrive and the eight-speed automatic, but it has more power, carbon-fiber body panels, standard M Carbon bucket seats and roughly 75 pounds less weight. It was built in limited numbers and has its own page, M3 CS (G80).
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 503 hp to 750 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 785 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
