About the BMW M4 Competition (G82)

Between the manual base M4 and the lightweight M4 CSL sits the M4 Competition, the rear-wheel-drive G82 coupe with an automatic gearbox. It pairs the higher of the two regular S58 outputs with the eight-speed M Steptronic and Drivelogic, and BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 3.8 seconds.

Next to the M3 Competition it shares engine, gearbox and the 112.5-inch wheelbase, but has two doors, four seats and a lower roofline. Carbon fiber reinforced plastic forms the roof panel, and the wheels are staggered, 19-inch at the front and 20-inch at the rear. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, or 180 mph when the optional M Driver’s Package is fitted, and the M Carbon bucket seats are among the options.

The coupe is also BMW’s yardstick for the CSL: the company measures that car’s 240-pound weight saving against this one. Buyers wanting all-wheel drive were offered the M4 Competition xDrive from the 2022 model year, which has its own page.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 503 hp and 479 lb-ft to 750 hp and 730 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 785 hp and 750 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

M4 Competition (G82) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the M4 Competition (G82) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2021–2024 BMW M4 Competition (G82) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

What is the difference between the M4 Competition and the M3 Competition?

The body. Both are rear-wheel-drive G-generation M cars with the same S58 rating and eight-speed automatic, but the M4 is a two-door coupe with four seats and the M3 a four-door sedan with five. The sedan is listed on our M3 Competition (G80) page.

Was the G82 M4 Competition offered with a manual gearbox?

Not in the US. There, every M4 Competition has the eight-speed M Steptronic automatic, and the six-speed manual is limited to the base M4, which leaves the factory with less power and is listed on our M4 (G82) page.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the M4 Competition (G82)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 503 hp to 750 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 785 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the M4 Competition (G82)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
