About the BMW M4 (F82)

For the 2015 model year the car that had been the M3 Coupe took a new name, M4, and moved to the F82 4 Series body, with US deliveries starting in early summer 2014. It uses the same S55 twin-turbo inline-six and both gearboxes of the M3 (F80) sedan, but has only two doors, a lower roof and seats for four.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic is used for the roof, saving more than 13 pounds on the coupe by BMW’s figure, and for the propeller shaft and the strut brace. The S55 revs to 7,600 rpm. A six-speed manual with throttle blipping is standard and a seven-speed M DCT with Launch Control was optional, and BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 4.1 and 3.9 seconds respectively, with top speed limited to 155 mph.

In the US the F82 was sold through the 2020 model year; the G82 that replaced it is listed as M4 (G82).

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 431 hp and 406 lb-ft to 560 hp and 560 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 600 hp and 600 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

M4 (F82) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the M4 (F82) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2015–2020 BMW M4 (F82) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

How can I tell an F82 M4 from a G82?

Check the model year and the grille. The F82 covers 2015 to 2020 and has a conventional pair of kidneys, while the G82, from 2021, has a large, deep frameless grille. The F82’s engine is the S55 and the G82’s the S58, and only the F82 offered a dual-clutch gearbox. The G82 has its own page, M4 (G82).

What separates the F82 M4 from the F80 M3?

Doors, seats and roof height. The F82 is a two-door coupe for four people and the F80 a four-door sedan; both use the twin-turbo S55, the same gearbox choices and carbon-fiber roofs. The sedan is listed on our M3 (F80) page.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the M4 (F82)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2020 car, Stage 1 takes it from 431 hp to 560 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 600 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the M4 (F82)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
