About the BMW M4 Competition xDrive (G82)

Adding a driven front axle to the G82 Competition coupe, the M4 Competition xDrive went on sale in August 2021 as a 2022 model, and only the Competition version of the coupe was offered with it. It keeps the rear-drive car’s S58 twin-turbo inline-six and eight-speed M Steptronic, weighs 3,979 pounds by BMW’s figure, and reaches 60 mph in 3.4 seconds.

In everyday driving the system is rear-biased. An electronically controlled multi-plate clutch engages the front axle when traction calls for it, while an Active M Differential manages torque across the rear. Choosing 4WD Sport keeps more of the drive at the back, and with stability control off a 2WD setting turns the coupe into a rear-wheel-drive car for the track. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, rising to 180 mph with the M Driver’s Package.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 503 hp and 479 lb-ft to 750 hp and 730 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 785 hp and 750 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

M4 Competition xDrive (G82) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the M4 Competition xDrive (G82) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2021–2024 BMW M4 Competition xDrive (G82) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

How is the M4 Competition xDrive different from the rear-drive M4 Competition?

Only in the drivetrain. Both have the S58 engine at the same factory rating and the eight-speed automatic, but the xDrive coupe adds drive to the front axle and, by BMW’s figures, reaches 60 mph 0.4 seconds sooner. The rear-drive coupe has its own page, M4 Competition (G82).

How does it compare with the M4 CSL (G82)?

The M4 CSL takes the opposite approach. It keeps rear-wheel drive, removes the rear seats and saves about 240 pounds against an M4 Competition, and BMW built only 1,000 of them. The CSL is listed on its own page.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the M4 Competition xDrive (G82)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 503 hp to 750 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 785 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the M4 Competition xDrive (G82)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
