The car
Introduced in mid-2018 as a 2019 model, the M5 Competition is the sharper of the two regular F90 sedans. Its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 makes more power than the standard car’s, and the changes underneath aim at precision: engine mounts with a much higher spring rate, a ride height lowered by 7 mm, a firmer rear anti-roll bar, and rear toe links mounted on ball joints instead of rubber bushings.
The drivetrain is the standard car’s, an eight-speed M Steptronic feeding M xDrive with its 2WD mode, and BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 3.1 seconds. High-gloss black finishes on the grille surround, mirror bases and side gills, a black rear spoiler, a model-specific M Sport exhaust and 20-inch forged wheels set it apart. For the 2021 model year it also gained new shock absorbers, a recalibrated damper control system and a Track mode.
On a 2023 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 591 hp and 553 lb-ft to 780 hp and 750 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 860 hp and 810 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2018–2023 BMW M5 Competition (F90) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.
Output, mounts and suspension. The V8 is tuned for more power, the engine mounts are much stiffer, and the car sits lower on a firmer rear anti-roll bar, with its own exhaust and trim. The standard F90 shares the gearbox and M xDrive and is listed on our M5 (F90) page.
The M5 CS, sold for 2022 only, goes further: more power again, about 230 pounds less weight through carbon-fiber panels and standard carbon-ceramic brakes, and four individual seats. It has its own page, M5 CS (F90).
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2023 car, Stage 1 takes it from 591 hp to 780 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 860 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
