About the BMW M5 (F10)

The F10 M5 brought turbocharging to BMW’s high-performance sedan. Sold from the 2013 model year, it replaced the E60’s V10 with a 4.4-liter V8 whose two twin-scroll turbochargers sit, with the catalytic converters, in the space between the cylinder banks, fed through a cross-bank exhaust manifold. It was the first BMW M engine with VALVETRONIC variable valve control, and BMW put its fuel consumption at about 30 percent below the V10 car’s.

Drive goes to the rear wheels only, through an Active M Differential and a seven-speed M DCT with Drivelogic or a six-speed manual that BMW offered in North America at no extra cost. Dynamic Damper Control, M-specific Servotronic steering, six-piston fixed brake calipers and 19-inch wheels are standard, the rev limiter sits at 7,200 rpm, and top speed is limited to 155 mph.

The all-wheel-drive successor is listed as M5 (F90), and the M6 (F12 / F13 / F06) shares this car’s drivetrain.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 560 hp and 502 lb-ft to 730 hp and 710 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 760 hp and 750 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

M5 (F10) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the M5 (F10) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2013–2017 BMW M5 (F10) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

How can I tell an F10 M5 from an F90?

Count the driven wheels and the gears. The F10 is rear-wheel drive, with a seven-speed dual-clutch or a six-speed manual, while the F90 has M xDrive all-wheel drive with a 2WD mode and an eight-speed automatic with a torque converter. The F90 is listed on its own page, M5 (F90).

Was the F10 M5 offered with a manual gearbox?

Yes, in North America. BMW confirmed a six-speed manual for the 2013 M5 and offered it at no extra cost in place of the seven-speed M DCT. Both versions have the same twin-turbo V8 and drive the rear wheels through the Active M Differential.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the M5 (F10)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2017 car, Stage 1 takes it from 560 hp to 730 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 760 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the M5 (F10)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
