The car
The F90 M5 reached US dealers in spring 2018 and changed the car’s layout: it was the first M5 with all-wheel drive. Its M xDrive system defaults to 4WD, offers a rear-biased 4WD Sport setting and, with stability control off, a 2WD mode for the rear wheels alone, while an Active M Differential divides torque between them. In place of the dual-clutch of the M5 (F10) came an eight-speed M Steptronic with Drivelogic.
The 4.4-liter V8 is again fed by two twin-scroll turbochargers. A carbon-fiber roof and an aluminum hood and front fenders save weight, and the optional M Carbon ceramic brakes cut unsprung and rotating mass by 50.7 pounds. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 3.2 seconds and a 155 mph limit, raised to 189 mph with the M Driver’s Package.
The 2021 update brought slimmer headlights with L-shaped light tubes, a larger grille and a 12.3-inch touchscreen. The M5 Competition (F90) and M5 CS (F90) have their own pages.
On a 2023 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 617 hp and 553 lb-ft to 780 hp and 750 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 860 hp and 810 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2018–2023 BMW M5 (F90) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.
The drive settings give it away. An F90 offers 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD modes and uses an eight-speed automatic, while the F10 always drives the rear wheels, through a seven-speed dual-clutch or a six-speed manual. The F10 is listed separately, as M5 (F10).
No, this page is the standard F90 sedan. The M5 Competition (F90) and M5 CS (F90) have stiffer engine mounts, firmer suspension and their own factory ratings, so each is listed on its own page. All three share the V8, the eight-speed gearbox and M xDrive.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2023 car, Stage 1 takes it from 617 hp to 780 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 860 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
