About the BMW M8 Competition (F91 / F92 / F93)

BMW M’s grand tourer comes in three bodies: the F92 coupe, the F91 convertible and the F93 four-door Gran Coupe. Production of the Competition coupe and convertible began at Dingolfing in July 2019, and the Gran Coupe was added afterward. All of them use the S63 twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with cross-bank exhaust manifolds, an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic and M xDrive, which can be switched to a 2WD mode.

The M8 introduced a Setup button that gathers engine, suspension, steering, M xDrive and braking settings in one place, and an M Mode button that changes the level of driver assistance. The coupe has a carbon-fiber roof, while the convertible’s insulated fabric top retracts in 15 seconds at up to 30 mph. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 3.0 seconds for the Competition coupe and 3.1 seconds for the convertible, with the M Driver’s Package lifting the limited top speed to 189 mph.

On a 2023 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 617 hp and 553 lb-ft to 780 hp and 750 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 860 hp and 810 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

M8 Competition (F91 / F92 / F93) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the M8 Competition (F91 / F92 / F93) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2020–2023 BMW M8 Competition (F91 / F92 / F93) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.

Which M8 Competition body styles are on this page?

This page lists the M8 Competition, which BMW built as a two-door coupe (F92), a convertible (F91) and a four-door Gran Coupe (F93). All three share the V8, the eight-speed automatic and M xDrive; they differ in roof, doors and weight.

How does the M8 Competition compare with the M5 Competition (F90)?

Mechanically they are close relatives, with the same rated S63 V8, eight-speed M Steptronic and M xDrive with a 2WD mode. The M8 is the coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe of the family, while the M5 is the sedan. The M5 Competition has its own page.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the M8 Competition (F91 / F92 / F93)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2023 car, Stage 1 takes it from 617 hp to 780 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 860 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the M8 Competition (F91 / F92 / F93)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
