The car
Before the M3 and M4 got it, the S58 engine went into these two SUVs. BMW revealed the first full M versions of the X3 and X4 in February 2019 as 2020 models, with production at Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina. The X3 M is the upright Sports Activity Vehicle and the X4 M the Sports Activity Coupe with a sloping roofline; the drivetrain and chassis are common to both.
The 3.0-liter inline-six uses two mono-scroll turbochargers, one for each set of three cylinders, along with a forged crankshaft and a closed-deck block, and revs to 7,200 rpm. An extra engine oil cooler and a separate transmission oil cooler support it. An eight-speed M Steptronic sends power to M xDrive, which favors the rear axle and has an Active M Differential, and BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 4.1 seconds for the standard models on their 20-inch wheels.
On a 2024 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 473 hp and 443 lb-ft to 750 hp and 730 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 785 hp and 750 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2019–2024 BMW X3 M / X4 M (F97 / F98) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.
The roofline. The X3 M is the conventional SUV with an upright tailgate, and the X4 M has a lower, coupe-like roof that slopes into the hatch. Both have the S58 engine, the eight-speed automatic and M xDrive, which is why they share this page.
At launch, Competition models had 21-inch wheels in Jet Black, a gloss-black kidney grille surround, black chrome exhaust tips and M Sport seats in extended Merino leather, while standard cars rode on 20-inch wheels in Orbit Grey. Competition cars have their own page, X3 M / X4 M Competition (F97 / F98).
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 473 hp to 750 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 785 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
