About the BMW X3 M / X4 M Competition (F97 / F98)

From launch, BMW offered both of its compact M SUVs in two outputs, and the Competition is the stronger one. Its S58 inline-six makes more power than the standard engine, and BMW’s figures for the 2020 models put it at 4.0 seconds to 60 mph, with the M Driver’s Package raising the limited top speed from 155 to 177 mph.

The extras are visible as well: 21-inch Jet Black wheels on 255/40 front and 265/40 rear tires, an M Sport exhaust with black chrome tailpipes, high-gloss black trim around the kidney grille and M Sport seats in extended Merino leather. Mechanically it otherwise matches the standard X3 M and X4 M, with the eight-speed M Steptronic, rear-biased M xDrive, model-specific suspension bushings and a body reinforced at the suspension mounting points. The X3 M Competition is the upright SUV and the X4 M Competition the version with the coupe roofline.

On a 2024 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 503 hp and 443 lb-ft to 750 hp and 730 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 785 hp and 750 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

X3 M / X4 M Competition (F97 / F98) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the X3 M / X4 M Competition (F97 / F98) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2019–2024 BMW X3 M / X4 M Competition (F97 / F98) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.

What does the Competition add over the standard X3 M and X4 M?

More power from the same S58 engine, 21-inch wheels instead of 20-inch, a sport exhaust and gloss-black exterior trim. The gearbox, M xDrive and chassis hardware are shared, and the standard models are listed on our X3 M / X4 M (F97 / F98) page.

Is this the same engine as the M3 Competition?

It is the same S58 family. The X3 M and X4 M were the first BMWs to use it, in 2019, before the G80 M3 and G82 M4 arrived for 2021, and the SUVs pair it with M xDrive as standard. The M3 Competition (G80) has its own page.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the X3 M / X4 M Competition (F97 / F98)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 503 hp to 750 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 785 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the X3 M / X4 M Competition (F97 / F98)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
