The car
Two shapes, one drivetrain: the X3 M40i (G01) is the conventional compact SUV, and the X4 M40i (G02) puts the same running gear under a sloping, coupe-style roof. Both are built at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, and both sit below the X3 M and X4 M.
A 3.0-liter inline-six drives all four wheels through xDrive and an eight-speed Sport Steptronic. The X3 M40i arrived for 2018 and the G02 X4 M40i for 2019; the X4 M40i sold from 2016 to 2018 belongs to the earlier F26 generation. For 2022 both were refreshed with a redesigned kidney grille, headlights, bumpers and taillights, and the six gained a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
For the 2022 X3 M40i, BMW listed an M Sport differential as an individual option, and it quotes 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds for the 2022 cars of either shape.
On a 2024 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 382 hp and 365 lb-ft to 495 hp and 500 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 515 hp and 565 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2018–2024 BMW X3 M40i / X4 M40i (G01 / G02) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.
The update arrived for the 2022 model year. Facelifted cars have a reshaped kidney grille, new headlights, bumpers and taillights, and their six-cylinder engine works with a 48-volt starter-generator. Cars from 2018 to 2021 have the original styling and no mild-hybrid system.
No. The X3 M / X4 M (F97 / F98) are BMW M models with the S58 engine developed by BMW M and their own chassis, and they have their own pages, including Competition versions. The M40i models are the M Performance versions of the regular X3 and X4.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 382 hp to 495 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 515 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
