About the BMW X5 xDrive50i

Two generations of X5 fall within this page. The 2013 cars are the last of the E70, which had moved to an eight-speed automatic with its 2011 update and was built until July 2013; the F15 arrived in US showrooms late that year as a 2014 model and was sold through 2018.

Both use a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with the turbochargers inside the vee, an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. For the F15, BMW added Valvetronic variable valve control to the V8 and took about 230 pounds out of the xDrive50i, and it quoted 0–60 mph in 4.9 seconds, 0.4 seconds quicker than the E70.

In the US range the xDrive50i sat above the six-cylinder sDrive35i, xDrive35i and xDrive35d, with the X5 M above it on its own page.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 449 hp and 480 lb-ft to 580 hp and 605 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 610 hp and 650 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

X5 xDrive50i tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the X5 xDrive50i does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2013–2018 BMW X5 xDrive50i models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

Is a 2013 X5 xDrive50i the same generation as a 2014?

No. A 2013 xDrive50i is an E70 with the earlier version of the V8, which lacks Valvetronic. The F15 that followed for 2014 has the reworked engine, a lighter body and new styling inside and out. Check the model year on your registration if you are unsure which you have.

How does the X5 xDrive50i compare with the X6 xDrive50i?

They share the V8, the eight-speed automatic and xDrive, and the X6 is built on X5 underpinnings. The X6 xDrive50i trades the X5’s upright tailgate and rear headroom for a sloping roofline, and it has its own page with slightly different catalog years.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the X5 xDrive50i?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2018 car, Stage 1 takes it from 449 hp to 580 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 610 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the X5 xDrive50i?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
