About the BMW X5 M / X6 M (F85 / F86)

BMW M’s second generation of its large SUVs, the F85 X5 M and the F86 X6 M, reached US showrooms in spring 2015 from Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina. The X5 M is the upright Sports Activity Vehicle and the X6 M the Sports Activity Coupe with a sloping roof; both seat five and share their engine, gearbox and drive system.

The 4.4-liter V8 combines a pair of TwinScroll turbochargers with cross-bank exhaust manifolds, VALVETRONIC and direct injection, and BMW put the cars’ fuel consumption about 20 percent below their predecessors’. An eight-speed M Steptronic with Drivelogic and Launch Control feeds xDrive, which varies torque between the axles through a multi-plate clutch, while Dynamic Performance Control shifts it between the rear wheels. Self-leveling rear air suspension, Dynamic Damper Control and forged 21-inch wheels are standard.

BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 4.0 seconds and a 155 mph limit, or 174 mph with the M Driver’s Package. The F95 and F96 that followed are listed as X5 M / X6 M (F95 / F96).

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 575 hp and 554 lb-ft to 730 hp and 710 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 760 hp and 750 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

X5 M / X6 M (F85 / F86) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the X5 M / X6 M (F85 / F86) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2015–2019 BMW X5 M / X6 M (F85 / F86) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

Does this page cover both the X5 M and the X6 M?

Yes. In this generation the F85 X5 M and the F86 X6 M share the twin-turbo V8, the eight-speed automatic and xDrive with Dynamic Performance Control. The X5 M has the upright tailgate of the regular X5, and the X6 M a roof that slopes down toward the rear.

How do I tell an F85 or F86 from the later F95 or F96?

The model year is the simplest guide: the F85 and F86 cover 2015 to 2019, and the F95 and F96 start in 2020. The later cars use M xDrive with an Active M Differential and a 4WD Sport setting, and from 2024 a mild-hybrid V8. They have their own page, X5 M / X6 M (F95 / F96).

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the X5 M / X6 M (F85 / F86)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2019 car, Stage 1 takes it from 575 hp to 730 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 760 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the X5 M / X6 M (F85 / F86)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
