The car
The F95 X5 M and F96 X6 M went on sale in spring 2020, again built in South Carolina. They keep a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, the S63 with a cross-bank exhaust manifold, and an eight-speed M Steptronic, but the drive system changed to M xDrive: rear-biased, with 4WD and 4WD Sport settings and an Active M Differential that divides torque across the rear axle.
BMW at first offered standard and Competition models, quoting 0–60 mph in 3.8 and 3.7 seconds. Standard cars ride on 21-inch wheels and the Competition on 21-inch front and 22-inch rear wheels. The chassis has Adaptive M suspension Professional with Active Roll Stabilization and an integrated braking system, a Setup button groups its settings, and top speed is limited to 155 mph, or 177 mph with the M Driver’s Package.
For 2024 the US cars were Competition models only, with the S68 V8 and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system whose motor sits in the transmission. The F85 and F86 before them are listed as X5 M / X6 M (F85 / F86).
On a 2024 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 617 hp and 553 lb-ft to 780 hp and 750 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 860 hp and 810 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2020–2024 BMW X5 M / X6 M (F95 / F96) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.
Look at the drive settings. F95 and F96 cars have M xDrive with 4WD and 4WD Sport modes and an Active M Differential, where the F85 and F86 use xDrive with Dynamic Performance Control. Every car from 2020 on is an F95 or F96. The earlier pair has its own page, X5 M / X6 M (F85 / F86).
They are still the F95 and F96, updated with the S68 mild-hybrid V8, new gear ratios, M Shadowline headlights about an inch and a half narrower, an all-black grille and a curved display with 12.3-inch and 14.9-inch screens. In the US BMW offered them only as Competition models.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 617 hp to 780 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 860 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
