The car

About the BMW Z4 M40i (G29)

A soft top, two seats and a 3.0-liter inline-six: the Z4 M40i is the most powerful version of the G29 roadster. In the US it launched alongside the four-cylinder sDrive30i, with BMW naming it a 2020 model, and it has no Z4 M above it in this generation.

Power reaches the rear wheels through an eight-speed Steptronic Sport with shift paddles, and an M Sport differential is standard. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds, a top speed limited to 155 mph and an even 50:50 weight distribution. The fabric roof opens or closes in about ten seconds at speeds up to 31 mph.

The car is built for BMW by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. Its 2023 update brought a grille with horizontal inner bars and revised trim.

On a 2024 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 382 hp and 369 lb-ft to 435 hp and 445 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 460 hp and 475 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

Z4 M40i (G29) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the Z4 M40i (G29) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2019–2024 BMW Z4 M40i (G29) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.

How is the Z4 M40i different from the four-cylinder Z4?

The four-cylinder cars, the sDrive30i in the US and the sDrive20i (G29) elsewhere, use a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. The M40i adds two cylinders and a standard M Sport differential, and it has its own catalog figures.

Was a manual gearbox offered on the Z4 M40i?

Not in the years this page covers. Every M40i from launch through 2024 uses the eight-speed Steptronic Sport. BMW added a six-speed manual later, through the Handschalter package for the 2025 model year.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the Z4 M40i (G29)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 382 hp to 435 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 460 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the Z4 M40i (G29)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
