The car
The sDrive20i is the entry point to the G29 Z4 roadster in markets outside the US. BMW USA offered the four-cylinder Z4 only as the sDrive30i, which uses a higher-output version of the same 2.0-liter engine, so a US-delivered car will not be an sDrive20i.
Its turbocharged 2.0-liter four drives the rear wheels. In BMW’s 2023 model-year data a six-speed manual is standard and the eight-speed Steptronic Sport optional, and BMW quotes 0–100 km/h in 6.6 seconds with the automatic or 6.8 with the manual. The roof is an electrically operated fabric top.
Like every G29 Z4, it is built for BMW by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. For the 2023 model year the four-cylinder cars gained the M Sport package as standard, along with a revised grille with horizontal inner bars.
On a 2024 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 194 hp and 236 lb-ft to 340 hp and 350 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 360 hp and 370 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2019–2024 BMW Z4 sDrive20i (G29) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.
No. In the US the G29 Z4 was offered as the sDrive30i and the M40i. The sDrive20i is the lower-output four-cylinder model sold in Europe and other markets. If your Z4 is a US sDrive30i, contact us before ordering so we can confirm what applies to your car.
The Z4 M40i (G29) uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, comes only with the eight-speed automatic in the catalog’s years and has an M Sport differential as standard. The sDrive20i keeps the same body and roof but uses the 2.0-liter four, with a manual gearbox available.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 194 hp to 340 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 360 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
