About the Ferrari 488 GTB / Spider

With the 488 GTB of 2015, Ferrari moved its mid-engine V8 berlinetta to turbocharging. It took over from the 458 Italia, and its name revives the classic Ferrari designation: 488 is the displacement of one cylinder in cubic centimeters, and GTB stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta.

The 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 has a flat-plane crankshaft, twin-scroll turbochargers that spin on ball bearings with compressor wheels in a titanium-aluminum alloy, and 200-bar direct injection. Variable Torque Management shapes how torque builds through the seven gears of the F1 dual-clutch transmission, and drive goes to the rear wheels. The blown rear spoiler was patented for this car, and three active flaps in the diffuser rotate to cut drag.

The 488 Spider made its debut at Frankfurt in September 2015. Its retractable hard top is 25 kg lighter than a soft top and can be raised or lowered in 14 seconds while the car is moving.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 670 hp and 560 lb-ft to 810 hp and 670 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 850 hp and 720 lb-ft.

FAQ

488 GTB / Spider tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the 488 GTB / Spider does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2016–2022 Ferrari 488 GTB / Spider models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

What do the numbers and letters in 488 GTB mean?

Eight cylinders of 488 cc each make the 3,902 cc V8, hence 488. GTB means Gran Turismo Berlinetta, a return to the naming Ferrari used on its classic models. The open version is simply called the 488 Spider, and both are on this page.

How is the 488 GTB different from the 488 Pista?

The 488 Pista is the later special series. Its engine borrows its intake layout and cooling from the 488 Challenge race car, it gains an S-Duct in the nose, and Ferrari made it 90 kg lighter than the GTB. It has its own page, as does the F8 Tributo that followed the 488 GTB.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the 488 GTB / Spider?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2022 car, Stage 1 takes it from 670 hp to 810 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 850 hp.
