The car
At the core of the MP4-12C is a one-piece carbon-fiber tub, the MonoCell, which weighs 75 kg (165 pounds) and carries aluminum frames front and rear. Mounted behind the cabin is the M838T, a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft and dry-sump lubrication, and a seven-speed SSG dual-clutch gearbox with McLaren’s Pre-Cog function drives the rear wheels.
McLaren quotes 0–60 mph in 3.0 seconds on the optional P Zero Corsa tires, with a top speed of 205 mph for the first US cars and 207 mph from the 2013 model year. Dry weight is 1,336 kg (2,945 pounds) as standard, or 1,301 kg (2,868 pounds) with the lightweight options.
Alongside the coupe, McLaren built the 12C Spider with a folding hard top, delivered from November 2012.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 625 hp and 443 lb-ft to 730 hp and 650 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 765 hp and 700 lb-ft.

Its hard top folds at speeds up to 19 mph. McLaren used the same MonoCell without adding strengthening, so the Spider weighs only 40 kg (88 pounds) more than the coupe, and it is quoted at 3.1 seconds to 62 mph and a top speed of 204 mph.
The 570S, launched at the end of 2015, belongs to McLaren’s later Sports Series. It uses the M838TE, a version of the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 with 30 percent new components, in a second-generation MonoCell II tub. The 12C has the original M838T and MonoCell. The 570S has its own page, 570S / 570GT.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2014 car, Stage 1 takes it from 625 hp to 730 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 765 hp.
