About the Mercedes-Benz E400 (W213)

For the 2018 model year the E400 name covered four bodies of the W213 E-Class family in the US. The sedan, new to the range that year, came only with 4MATIC; the coupe and cabriolet could be ordered with rear-wheel drive or 4MATIC; and the 4MATIC wagon seated up to seven, with folding rear-facing seats in the cargo area.

All four use a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic. Mercedes-Benz quotes 0–60 mph in 5.2 to 5.5 seconds depending on body and drive, and limits top speed to 130 mph.

For 2019 Mercedes-Benz retuned the V6 for more output and renamed these cars the E450, which has its own page. Above the E400 sat the E43 AMG sedan, whose version of the V6 has larger turbochargers and higher boost and drives through a rear-biased AMG all-wheel-drive system.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 328 hp and 350 lb-ft to 420 hp and 485 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 455 hp and 520 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

E400 (W213) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the E400 (W213) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2018 Mercedes-Benz E400 (W213) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

Is my E400 the generation this page describes?

The 2018 sedan, coupe, cabriolet and wagon all are. Earlier E400s may not be: the name was used from 2015 on the previous E-Class, and the 2017 E400 Coupe and Cabriolet were still the older two-door design with a seven-speed automatic. Our catalog lists the E400 for 2018.

How is the E400 different from the E450?

The E450 replaced the E400 for 2019 in the same bodies, first with an uprated version of the twin-turbo V6 and, from 2021, with a 3.0-liter inline-six and a 48-volt starter-generator. Those cars are on the E450 page with their own factory figures.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the E400 (W213)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2018 car, Stage 1 takes it from 328 hp to 420 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 455 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the E400 (W213)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,399). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
