The car
The E53 succeeded the E43 for 2019 and spread the six-cylinder AMG E-Class across three bodies: sedan, coupe and cabriolet. Its engine is the electrified 53-series inline-six, displacing 3.0 liters, with a conventional turbocharger helped at low speed by an electric compressor and a starter-alternator between engine and gearbox that adds short bursts of electric power and feeds a 48-volt network.
Power goes through the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G to AMG Performance 4MATIC+, which varies the split between the axles. Mercedes-Benz quotes 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds for the sedan and 4.3 for the coupe, with the limiter at 130 mph on all-season tires and 155 mph on summer tires. The coupe and cabriolet seat four and the sedan five.
The 2021 update gave the E53 an AMG-specific grille, redesigned LED headlamps and two-piece taillamps, the MBUX system with AMG displays and a new AMG Performance steering wheel, and Mercedes-AMG revised the suspension.
On a 2024 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 429 hp and 380 lb-ft to 525 hp and 485 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 550 hp and 515 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Not in the US. For this E-Class family Mercedes-Benz USA offered the E53 as a sedan, coupe and cabriolet, while its wagons were the E450 and the V8 AMG E63 S. An AMG E53 wagon arrived only with the later E53 Hybrid.
No. The E53 Hybrid sold from the 2025 model year is a plug-in hybrid built on the newer E-Class generation, pairing its inline-six with an electric motor and adding rear-axle steering. This page is the earlier E53 with the 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 429 hp to 525 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 550 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,399). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
