About the Mercedes-Benz E550 (W212)

The E550 was the V8 E-Class below the E63 AMG, and 2012 marked its change of engine: the 5.5-liter V8 gave way to a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8, paired with a seven-speed automatic in every body. The sedan was now sold only with 4MATIC all-wheel drive, while the coupe and cabriolet kept rear-wheel drive.

The 4.7-liter engine has the same displacement and layout as the V8 that Mercedes-Benz used in the CLS550, GL550 and SL550 of the period, each with its own rating. For the two-door E550s, Mercedes-Benz quotes 0–60 mph in 4.9 seconds and an electronically limited 130 mph; the coupe and cabriolet ride on a 108.7-inch wheelbase and have their own body rather than the W212 sedan’s.

This page covers all three body styles across the catalog’s 2012–2016 range.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 402 hp and 443 lb-ft to 580 hp and 650 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 600 hp and 675 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

E550 (W212) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the E550 (W212) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2012–2016 Mercedes-Benz E550 (W212) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

Is a 2010 or 2011 E550 the same car?

Not under the hood. E550s up to 2011 have the earlier 5.5-liter V8, and the sedan was also offered with rear-wheel drive. The 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 arrived for 2012 in the sedan, coupe and cabriolet, which is where this page starts.

Which E550 body styles does this page cover?

All three. From 2012 the W212 sedan came only with 4MATIC, and the coupe and cabriolet drove the rear wheels. The two-door cars share the name, the twin-turbo V8 and the seven-speed gearbox with the sedan but have their own body; Mercedes-Benz USA described the coupe as the only pillarless design in its class.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the E550 (W212)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2016 car, Stage 1 takes it from 402 hp to 580 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 600 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the E550 (W212)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,399). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
