About the Mercedes-Benz G550 (W463)

In this page’s years the G550 was still the long-running W463 G-Class: hand-assembled in Graz, Austria, on a ladder frame with rigid axles front and rear, a transfer case with a low range and three electrically controlled 100-percent differential locks. Permanent four-wheel drive splits torque 50:50 between the axles, and a seven-speed automatic does the shifting.

The engine changed during the run. The 2015 G550 has a 5.5-liter V8, and for 2016 Mercedes-Benz fitted a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that stayed through 2018; by 2017 the G550 also offered adjustable suspension, which Mercedes-Benz described as new to the G-Class. It quotes 0–60 mph in 5.9 seconds for the 2018 model and an electronic limit of 130 mph.

The redesigned W463A from 2019 is listed as G550 (W463A), and the AMG version of these years as G63 AMG (W463).

On a 2018 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 416 hp and 450 lb-ft to 565 hp and 615 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 585 hp and 635 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

G550 (W463) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the G550 (W463) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2015–2018 Mercedes-Benz G550 (W463) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.

Is my G550 a W463 or a W463A?

Model years up to 2018 are the W463, with rigid axles at both ends, a seven-speed automatic and a 50:50 torque split. The W463A from 2019 looks much the same but has independent front suspension, a nine-speed gearbox, a 40:60 split and a redesigned cabin. It has its own page, G550 (W463A).

How does the G550 differ from the G63 AMG (W463)?

They share the body, ladder frame and differential locks. The G63 has AMG’s hand-built 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC gearbox and side-exit exhausts, and Mercedes-Benz estimated its 2017 0–60 mph time at 5.3 seconds. The G63 of these years has its own page.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the G550 (W463)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2018 car, Stage 1 takes it from 416 hp to 565 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 585 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the G550 (W463)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on. It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
