The car
Mercedes-Benz launched the GL in 2006 as a full seven-seat SUV, and in this page’s years the GL550 was its V8 version, below the AMG GL63. The GL name lasted until the 2016 model year; after a facelift the large SUV was renamed GLS for 2017, the S-Class letter for the brand’s largest SUV.
The 2012 GL550 belongs to the first generation and has a 5.5-liter V8. The second generation, the X166, brought a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 for 2013, again with a seven-speed automatic and 4MATIC all-wheel drive; the GL450 of the same generation also used a 4.7-liter V8 at first and had a 3.0-liter V6 by 2015.
The X166 continued as the GLS550 for 2017–2019 with a nine-speed automatic in place of the seven-speed; that car has its own page, GLS550 (X166).
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 429 hp and 516 lb-ft to 580 hp and 650 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 600 hp and 675 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2012–2015 Mercedes-Benz GL550 models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.
No. The 2012 GL550 is the first-generation GL, with a 5.5-liter V8. The 2013 model year brought the second generation with the 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8, which carried on, in updated form, into the GLS550.
They are the same generation. For 2017 the updated SUV was renamed GLS, and in the GLS550 the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed replaced the seven-speed automatic. Its catalog figures differ from the GL550’s, so it has its own page.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2015 car, Stage 1 takes it from 429 hp to 580 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 600 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,399). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
