The car
The X167 GLS, built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, arrived for 2020 as the largest Mercedes-Benz SUV, on a 123.4-inch wheelbase that is 2.4 inches longer than the X166’s. The GLS450 is its six-cylinder model, below the V8 GLS580 and the AMG GLS63. Every seat row is power-adjustable, the second row can be a three-seat bench or two individual seats for seven or six places, and the third row is designed for adults up to 6.4 feet tall.
Its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six carries EQ Boost, an integrated starter-generator on a 48-volt system, and drives through the 9G-TRONIC and variable 4MATIC. The same 48-volt system powers the optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL. Mercedes-Benz estimates 0–60 mph at 5.9 seconds and limits the GLS450 to 130 mph.
The 2024 update brought a more prominent grille with four louvers, new LED taillights and a more powerful version of the inline-six.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 362 hp and 369 lb-ft to 430 hp and 470 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 450 hp and 485 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2021–2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS450 (X167) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.
No. GLS450s from 2017 to 2019 are the previous X166 generation, with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 and 50:50 4MATIC. The X167 GLS450 arrived for 2020 with the inline-six and 48-volt starter-generator, and it is the car this page describes.
They share the inline-six, the 48-volt system and the nine-speed, but the GLS is the full-size three-row SUV on a 123.4-inch wheelbase, with power adjustment for every row, while the GLE is the mid-size model. The GLE450 (V167) has its own page.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2024 car, Stage 1 takes it from 362 hp to 430 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 450 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,399). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
