About the Mercedes-Benz S450 (W222)

The S450 joined the W222 S-Class with its 2018 update as the new entry model, below the V8 S560, and was sold for 2018 to 2020 with rear-wheel drive or 4MATIC on a 124.6-inch wheelbase. It shares the facelift’s new bumpers, headlamps and taillamps, the grille previously reserved for V12 models, and the twin 12.3-inch displays merged under one glass panel.

Unlike the later CLS450 and E450, which use an inline-six, the US S450 has a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, paired with the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed. Rear-wheel-drive cars could be ordered with MAGIC BODY CONTROL and its curve-tilting function, which was not offered with 4MATIC. Mercedes-Benz quotes 0–60 mph in 5.0 seconds with rear-wheel drive and 4.8 with 4MATIC, and a 130 mph limit.

For 2021 the next S-Class generation replaced it, with the S500 4MATIC and S580 4MATIC as its first US models.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 362 hp and 369 lb-ft to 420 hp and 485 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 455 hp and 520 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

S450 (W222) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the S450 (W222) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2018–2020 Mercedes-Benz S450 (W222) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

Does the S450 have an inline-six?

Not in the US. The S450 sold here for 2018–2020 uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with a nine-speed automatic. The inline-six with a 48-volt starter-generator reached American buyers in other models, such as the 2019 CLS450 and the E450 from 2021.

How is the S450 different from the S63 AMG?

They share the facelifted W222 body. The AMG S63 has a handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with fully variable torque distribution, while the S450 has the V6 and a choice of rear-wheel drive or 4MATIC. The S63 has its own page, S63 AMG (W222).

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the S450 (W222)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2020 car, Stage 1 takes it from 362 hp to 420 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 455 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the S450 (W222)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,399). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
