About the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG (W222)

AMG’s version of the W222 S-Class sedan puts a hand-built twin-turbo V8 in a full-size luxury car. In US form it rides on a 124.6-inch wheelbase and drives all four wheels.

Two powertrains fall within this page. Cars from 2014 to 2017 use a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 with the seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT and AMG Performance 4MATIC. For 2018 Mercedes-AMG replaced it with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that carries its turbochargers inside the vee and has cylinder deactivation, along with a nine-speed MCT and the fully variable 4MATIC+ system. Mercedes-Benz quotes 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds for the 2017 car and 3.4 for the 2018.

The same update brought the LED Intelligent Light System and new bumpers front and rear. The V12 S65 that sat above it is a separate car with rear-wheel drive.

On a 2020 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 603 hp and 664 lb-ft to 760 hp and 735 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 800 hp and 750 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

S63 AMG (W222) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the S63 AMG (W222) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2014–2020 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG (W222) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.

Does my S63 have the 5.5-liter or the 4.0-liter V8?

It depends on the model year. S63 sedans from 2014 to 2017 have the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 and a seven-speed gearbox; those from 2018 to 2020 have the smaller 4.0-liter V8 with cylinder deactivation and a nine-speed MCT. The catalog lists a different factory figure for each.

Is the S65 covered here?

No. The S65 of this generation has a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12, rear-wheel drive and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic, so it shares little with the S63 below the body, and it is not in our catalog. Get in touch if you have an S65 and want to ask about it.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the S63 AMG (W222)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2020 car, Stage 1 takes it from 603 hp to 760 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 800 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the S63 AMG (W222)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,399). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
