About the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG (R231)

Built around an aluminum body with a power-operated folding hard top, the R231 SL is a two-seat roadster for covering long distances quickly, and the SL63 is its V8 AMG model. A hand-built 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 drives the rear wheels through the seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT, and the suspension is AMG’s sports version of Active Body Control.

The 2017 model year brought the update. Outside, a twin-blade grille that widens toward the bottom, an A-wing front apron and a hood with power domes; underneath, a mechanical rear-axle differential lock as standard, quicker MCT shifts from revised software and five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs. Mercedes-Benz quotes 0–60 mph in 4.0 seconds and an electronically limited 186 mph for the updated car.

The SL65 AMG (R231) shares the body with a V12 and has its own page.

On a 2019 car, Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 577 hp and 664 lb-ft to 675 hp and 765 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 695 hp and 785 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

SL63 AMG (R231) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the SL63 AMG (R231) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2012–2019 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG (R231) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; figures and prices for each year are shown in the table above.

How does the SL63 differ from the SL550 (R231)?

The two share the aluminum body and folding hard top. The SL550 uses a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 with a conventional automatic, a nine-speed by 2017, and is limited to 155 mph. The SL63 has AMG’s hand-built 5.5-liter engine, the MCT gearbox and larger front brakes. The SL550 has its own page.

Which SL63 model years does this page cover?

Our catalog lists the SL63 from 2012 through 2019. Every R231 SL63 has the 5.5-liter V8 and seven-speed MCT, and cars from 2017 on add the updated front and the standard rear-axle differential lock. The catalog shows a higher factory figure from 2015, so check the table for your year.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the SL63 AMG (R231)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2019 car, Stage 1 takes it from 577 hp to 675 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 695 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the SL63 AMG (R231)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,399). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
