About the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG (R231)

Twelve cylinders set the SL65 apart from every other R231 SL. Its hand-built 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 drives the rear wheels through the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC, a seven-speed automatic, where the V8 SL63 uses the MCT.

Mercedes-Benz also gave it more as standard. The Active Body Control suspension comes with its switchable Sport and Comfort setting, optional on the SL63; the wheels are forged and ceramic-polished, 19 inches at the front and 20 at the rear; and the side skirts carry high-gloss chrome inserts. The 2017 SL65 weighs 4,299 pounds, about 230 more than the SL63, yet Mercedes quotes 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds, a tenth quicker.

Like the SL63, it received the 2017 update with the new front design and a mechanical rear-axle differential lock as standard.

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 621 hp and 738 lb-ft to 750 hp and 960 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 800 hp and 1050 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

FAQ

SL65 AMG (R231) tuning questions

More answers in our FAQ

Which years of the SL65 AMG (R231) does this tune fit?

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2012–2018 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG (R231) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.

What does the SL65 have that the SL63 AMG (R231) does not?

The V12. Where the SL63 has a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 and the MCT gearbox, the SL65 has a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 with a torque-converter seven-speed automatic. It also comes standard with forged wheels, the switchable suspension setting and chrome exterior details. The SL63 has its own page.

Which SL65 model years does this page cover?

Our catalog lists the SL65 for 2012 to 2018, with the same factory figure in every year. All R231 SL65s pair the V12 with the seven-speed automatic, and cars from 2017 on have the updated front with the twin-blade grille.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the SL65 AMG (R231)?

Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2018 car, Stage 1 takes it from 621 hp to 750 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 800 hp.

Do I need a TCU tune for the SL65 AMG (R231)?

A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($2,399). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
