The car
Porsche’s seventh-generation 911, the 991, reached the US for 2012 on an all-new platform with a longer wheelbase, a wider track and a body of aluminum and steel. It was the first new 911 to weigh less than the model it replaced. This page covers the entry-level 991.1 cars, the ones with the 3.4-liter engine.
That engine is a naturally aspirated flat-six with direct injection and a 7,800 rpm redline; turbocharging only reached the base Carrera with the later 991.2 update. A seven-speed manual is standard, a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch is the option, and the steering is electromechanical.
Three variants share the drivetrain. The Carrera drives its rear wheels and came as a coupe or cabriolet. The Carrera 4, added for 2013, sends power to all four wheels and has wider rear bodywork. The Targa 4 followed for 2014, pairing that drive system with a wide roll-over bar and a roof section that stows itself at the rear at the push of a button.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and takes it from 345 hp and 288 lb-ft to 385 hp and 315 lb-ft on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 is calibrated for supporting bolt-on modifications and high-octane fuel, for 400 hp and 325 lb-ft. The gearbox has its own controller and torque limits, so the optional TCU tune raises them to match, with sharper shifts and stronger clutch clamping.

Our online catalog lists Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for 2012–2016 Porsche 911 Carrera / Carrera 4 / Targa 4 (991.1) models. Choose your year at the top of the page; the figures and prices are the same for every year.
Start with the engine. The 991.1 Carrera, Carrera 4 and Targa 4 use a naturally aspirated 3.4-liter flat-six, while the 991.2 Carrera of 2017 onward has a 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine. The later car also has vertical louvers in the engine-lid grille. It has its own page, 911 Carrera / Carrera T (991.2).
No. The Carrera S, Carrera 4S, Targa 4S and the GTS models use the larger 3.8-liter version of the engine and share their own page, 911 Carrera S / 4S / Targa / GTS (991.1). This page is only for the 3.4-liter Carrera, Carrera 4 and Targa 4.
Stage 1 is calibrated for the car as it left the factory and runs on pump-grade fuel. Stage 2 pairs the calibration with supporting bolt-on modifications such as downpipes and runs on high-octane fuel. On a 2016 car, Stage 1 takes it from 345 hp to 385 hp. Stage 2 takes it to 400 hp.
A TCU tune is available as an add-on ($1,999). It raises the transmission’s torque limits and sharpens the shifts so the gearbox can handle the extra power. Ship your TCU in the same box as your ECU.
